Women demand work in Za’atari Refugee camp
campaign and video series for oxfam
In 2012, Ghozlan fled Syria and found refuge in Za'atari Refugee Camp, Jordan. But seven years later, a collection of policy failures had kept her locked out of the job market.
The is my favourite kind of collaborative filmmaking: Ghozlan determined the focus and direction of this film, and her testimony informed Oxfam’s advocacy position in Jordan. That position was in turn picked up by the UN Agencies she was initially criticizing.
In the end, Jordan committed to increase opportunities for Syrian refugee women. Only time will tell whether they deliver.
I’m just so enamoured with the way Oxfam approaches nonprofit stories. Rather than a tired old success story about a greenhouse project, we adressed the root causes of poverty in our storytelling, and advocated for policy change that could improve peoples lives.
